Jönköping University has a distinct focus on entrepreneurship, spanning internationally leading research, relevant education and a range of other inspirational activities. In a ranking of publications of entrepreneurship research from 1995-2006, the university ranks ninth globally and third in Europe*.
The word entrepreneurship is used as the ability to bring about changes — innovations. It can be done in the public or private sector, through changes in existing activities or by starting new activities, in some cases new enterprises, and it can be done by one or more people.
Jönköping International Business School and the School of Engineering focus on entrepreneurship in their first cycle-study programmes. A course in entrepreneurship and business development is part of several study programmes and there are also study programmes focusing on entrepreneurship and innovation.
Jönköping International Business School has a strong research environment within entrepreneurship with the centres CEnSE (Centre for Entrepreneurship and Spatial Economics), CESIS (Centre of Excellence for Science and Innovation Studies — a collaboration with KTH Royal Institute of Technology) and CeFEO (Centre for Family Enterprise and Ownership).
At the School of Education and Communication, entrepreneurship forms an important part of the renewal of pedagogy and lifelong learning. The Academy for School-Related Research and Development is a collaboration between 13 municipalities, enterprises and the university and it has a programme for entrepreneurial learning, SkolKraft. Encell, the national centre for lifelong learning, has a national research programme devoted to women's entrepreneurship.
At the School of Health Sciences, knowledge of improvement work is part of all study programmes. The collaboration in the research area Quality Improvements, Innovations and Leadership includes a Master's Programme which centres on quality improvement and leadership in health care and social care.
The Jönköping Academy for Improvement of Health and Welfare is a platform for research within the research area Quality Improvements, Innovations and Leadership, and is a collaboration between the university, the county council, the municipalities in the county, and Dartmouth Institute in the US, among others.
