Jönköping University is very happy to be able to provide housing to their international students. Nevertheless, there are a large number of students arriving each semester and the administration deadlines are tight and often close to the arrival dates. Hence, in order for the accommodation process to be manageable there are a few things that are good for you to know.
When you apply you accept:
That the University will find you housing, the monthly rent might be up to 4000 SEK/month, and you must accept the contract you will be given upon arrival (even if it does not match any of your choices). If you are not happy with your accommodation once you have seen it, you can cancel the lease straight away and after the three month cancellation period look for housing yourself. The Accommodation Office, however, recommends that you give your accommodation a chance and continue to stay there as all housing options has their pros and cons, most students settle in their give accommodation after a few weeks.
Can I have information about my accommodation beforehand?
Students will be presented with accommodation upon arrival; unfortunately the accommodation office will be unable to provide this information in advance. This is due to the fact that administrative changes can sometimes be made until the final days before the students´ arrival. Under certain circumstances students will be offered accommodation alternatives different from those listed in the accommodation and arrival application.
Shared or single room
Shared rooms are used as an option when the number of students arriving is large. In an effort not have an overload in the accommodation the goal is always to limit the use of shared rooms. Effectively this means that the option of sharing a room is more likely during fall semester. During spring semester most students live in single rooms, with the exception of those who share an apartment.
Temporary housing
Sometimes during the beginning of a semester temporary housing, usually a youth hostel, is offered to some students. This is due to different circumstance, for example if the old tenant has not vacated the room before the new student arrives. We always try to solve the temporary housing situation as quickly as possible but occasionally it might take a few weeks before the move can be made to the regular accommodation.
Accommodations are booked from the beginning of a semester, hence:
No matter when you arrive during a semester you will have to pay rent from the beginning of the semester, i.e. if you arrive on 5 September you will have to pay rent from 15 August. Exception: The autumn semester starts on 15 August and the spring semester ends on 15 June. If you arrive/leave on or after 15 August or on or before 15 June you may only be obliged to pay half of the rent during these months. Please note: this is not the case for all accommodation alternatives and it does not apply if you arrive earlier in August or leave later in June.
Rent and deposit
Rent is paid monthly and in advance, it can be paid at any Bank or Forex office using a credit card or cash. Please note, you will not pay any rent or deposit upon arrival. The first rent and/or deposit will be sent to your accommodation after you arrived.
