Information for Parents

It is a big decision for a student to go abroad to do a full degree or part of their studies and it is only natural that parents wish to have as much information as possible about the university their son or daughter may go to, in order to assist them in making the decision. On this page we have gathered information and links that might be useful for parents of prospective students.

Jönköping University

Jönköping University Foundation is one of three independent institutions of higher education (not state-owned) in Sweden offering postgraduate programmes. Jönköping University operates on the basis of an agreement with the Government and is obliged to follow the statutes, ordinances and regulations relevant to the higher education sector.

Research and education are carried out at four schools:

The University has some 12,000 students, of which 1,300 are international students.

Why Jönköping University?

Jönköping University offers a high academic standard and an inspiring environment for higher education. We have several courses and study programmes taught in English on all three levels: Bachelor's, Master's and Doctoral.

Jönköping University is one of the leading universities in Sweden with regards to international exchange. The exchange programme is characterised by: focused profiles, an international dimension to all activities, an entrepreneurial spirit as well as a close collaboration with the community in its surroundings.

At Jönköping University we also do all we can to help our international students settle in to their life and studies in Jönköping. All international students are provided with accommodation if they apply correctly and announce their arrival in time. During the "pick-up" weekend, the University offers a pick-up service to all international students who have applied for accommodation through the University.

Each school has its own international office, with staff that can provide your son or daughter with information, guidance and assistance during their studies.

Why Jönköping?

Jönköping is the tenth largest city in Sweden and has a population of some 129,000. It is located in a region identified by its innovative and entrepreneurial spirit. The city is easily accessible and there are excellent links between Jönköping and the other major cities in Sweden as well as connections with the continent.

In Jönköping you can find most things around the corner. The city centre has pedestrian streets lined with shops, cafés and restaurants. Just a short walk from the campus you will find the long sandy beaches of Lake Vättern. There is a wide range of leisure and sports facilities and the great outdoors is within easy reach, offering forests, mountains and lakes. Jönköping also has a wide variety of cultural venues; theatres, museums, cinemas and a concert hall.

Why Sweden?

Sweden is a safe and modern country. The crime rate is low and there is virtually no risk of any natural disasters. Swedes are open and have a multicultural frame of mind. For instance, most Swedes have a good understanding of the English language. Half of Sweden's surface area is covered in forests while lakes and rivers make up for 10 percent. Swedes are environmentally conscious and our air, waters and rivers are clean.

Practical Information

Before students arrive in Sweden, it is important that they have adequate health insurance coverage. All students at Jönköping University are covered by a personal injury insurance for students. This is applicable when the student is in Sweden and covers all injuries during university hours and during travel to and from the location where university hours are spent. It does not cover injuries during leisure time or costs for medical treatment during an illness. Depending on what country the student originates from they may have to take out insurance of their own.

We look forward to welcoming your son or daughter at Jönköping University!
