Research funders invest in open access

The Swedish Research Council, Forte, Formas, and Vinnova have decided to collectively fund publication costs for publishers that exclusively publish fully open access journals. At JU, this means that researchers can publish open access articles free of charge in journals from Frontiers, MJS, and PLOS.

All organisations that are part of the Bibsam consortium have been exempted from paying any publication fees. This means that neither the author nor the university will have to pay any fee for publication in journals from Frontiers, MJS (Medical Journals Sweden) and PLOS. As a first step, the funders will cover the costs of publication for the years 2024 and 2025. This decision holds significant symbolic value, as most major publishers still publish hybrid journals that keep a large number of articles behind paywalls.
