Den forskning som Mats Granlund ägnar sig åt är knuten till forskningsprogrammet CHILD, som är ett samarbete mellan Mälardalens Högskola och Högskolan i Jönköping, Institutet för Handikappvetenskap Örebro Universitet och Linköpings Universitet. Forskningen handlar om positivt vardagsfungerande hos barn, ungdomar och vuxna med funktionshinder eller i behov av särskilt stöd av andra skäl.

I dag ses hälsa som något mer än bara frånvaron av sjukdom. Hälsa är också närvaron av välbefinnande och upplevelsen av att kunna styra sitt liv. Mats är tillsammans med kollega ansvarig för ett 20 tal forskningsprojekt som handlar om olika faktorer hos individen, i samspelet mellan individen och miljön samt i miljön som påverkar positivt vardagsfungerande hos personer i behov av särskilt stöd. De har bestämt sig för att personer som är delaktiga i sitt liv och som upplever att de har inflytande över vad som händer dem, mår bra. Oavsett vad projekten handlar om försöker de "mäta" sambanden mellan hur enskilda individer fungerar i sin vardag och de faktorer vi är intresserade av. Det finns också ett intresse av att se på hur människor själva uppfattar "må bra".

Projekten handlar bland annat om vad som kännetecknar små barn som över tid mår stabilt bra eller över tid mår bättre och bättre jämfört med barn som inte mår bra. Studier görs också på vad som kännetecknar barn och ungdomar med funktionshinder som är delaktiga och engagerade i sitt liv jämfört med de barn som inte är lika delaktiga. En del projekt studerar familjer som är skickliga på att anpassa sitt vardagsfungerande till att leva med en familjemedlem som har ett funktionshinder eller en kronisk sjukdom.

Teoretiskt bygger forskningen på systemteori. Det innebär att vi ser människan som ett system med olika delar som är beroende av varandra och av samspelet med omgivningen. Antagandet kan därför göras att det alltid finns många anledningar till att människor fungerar på ett visst sätt. Antagandet om att det alltid finns många orsaker till vardagsfungerande gör att man i forskningen försöker tillämpa och utveckla forskningsmetoder som gör det möjligt att följa personer längre tidsperioder och titta på många faktorer samtidigt och hur de hänger ihop.

I forskningen ingår samarbete med forskare vid ett flertal universitet i Europa, Nordamerika, Australien och Afrika, vilket syns i flertalet av de vetenskapliga artiklar som publicerats i internationella tidsskrifter. Samarbete finns också med Världshälsoorganisationen, 15 europeiska partners och svenska Socialstyrelsen kring hälsoklassifikationssystemet- ICF. Även de internationella sakkunniguppdragen det senaste åren berör forskningsfonder eller bedömningar av doktorsavhandlingar och professorskandidater i USA, Australien och i Sydafrika.
