Maria Björk är legitimerad sjuksköterska och utbildad barnsjuksköterska. Hon har arbetat vid Barn och Ungdomssjukhuset, Lunds Universitetssjukhus under 15 år, främst på den onkologiska enheten för barn. Sedan 2015 arbetar hon vid Jönköping University, främst inom Specialistsjuksköterskeutbildningen med inriktning mot hälso- och sjukvård för barn och ungdom samt Specialistsjuksköterskeutbildningen med inriktning mot distriktssjuksköterska.

År 2008 disputerade Maria vid Lunds universitet. Titeln på hennes avhandling var ”Att leva med barncancer - familjemedlemmarnas erfarenheter och behov”. Hon blev docent vid Jönköping University år 2016.

 

Marias forskning fokuserar familjer och barn i behov av särskilt stöd. Hennes huvudsakliga forskningsfokus är pediatrisk onkologisk omvårdnad, där hon över tid studerat hela familjer där ett barn diagnosticerats med cancer, hälsa hos små barn som diagnostiserats med cancer, palliativ vård, personcentrerad vård inom den pediatriska onkologiska omvårdnaden och även problem och stöd i vardagen för barn med hjärntumörer. Hon har också fokuserat barn med Downs syndrom, deras allmänna och orala hälsa.

 

Ett annat forskningsfokus är hälsa hos familjer där en förälder har dövblindhet. Forskningen inom detta område är sparsam. Studier har genomförts med fokus på föräldern med dövblindhet, partnern, barnet och hela familjen.

 

På grund av att många svenska patienter och släktingar klagar över att inte känna sig bra bemötta av hälso- och sjukvårdspersonal utvecklades en interventionskurs inom grundutbildningen till sjuksköterska. Ett kodningsschema som baseras på Swanson’s caring teori utvecklades också. Kodningsschemat används för att analysera videoinspelningar där vårdstudenternas vårdande beteende kodas.

 

Björk är tillhör forskningsgruppen CHILD, en tvärvetenskaplig forskargrupp vid Jönköping University. Hon är också medlem i Swedish Institute for Disability Research (SIDR), ett samarbete mellan Jönköping University, Örebro universitet och Linköpings universitet. Hon var ämnesföreträdare i omvårdnad mellan 2016 och 2019. Sedan 2018 är hon ansvarig för det akademiska utbytet och samarbetet mellan School of Nursing (SON) vid University of North Carolina i Chapel Hill, USA. Björk samarbetar nationellt med forskare i Sverige men också internationellt med forskare från Rigshospitalet i Danmark, University of Porto i Portugal och University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill, USA.

Hon har erhållit forskningsanslag från barncancerfonden, både till post doc studier men också till forskningsprojekt.
